SPEL Waterclean Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTW)

SPEL Waterclean Floating Treatment wetlands (FTW) are an innovation of the traditional technology that hydroponically grows emergent macrophyte plant species in a buoyant matrix floating on the water surface. Similar to traditional wetlands, FTWs incorporate deeper water zones, however, because the plants are floating, deep zones can extend beneath the full footprint of the wetland, and larger variations in detention depth and times can be accommodated. Designs vary from project to project, but often incorporate emergent macrophytes on the wetland edges as well. FTWs are constructed from UV-stabilised, recycled PET, coir and polystyrene matrix planted with emergent wetland vegetation. The FTW modules are custom-built to suit the application but standard dimensions are 4m long by 2m wide by 200mm thick.

  • Innovation on traditional constructed wetlands
  • Facilitates footprint reduction from traditional wetlands
  • Designed for 80% TSS, 60% TP and 45% TN removal
  • Aesthetic and ecological functions
  • Permits larger extended detention depths
  • Less earthworks requirements
  • Flexible, modular, customisable
